Host Your Own Venice Film Festival with Italian Nibbles, Wines and Viewing

The Venice Film Festival showcases the year’s most exciting, innovative and entertaining works of international cinema. It’s the oldest film festival in the world (it turned 74 this year!) – and for many of the biggest names in cinema, it’s the event of the year. But just because you couldn’t make it to Italy for the cinematic festivities earlier this month doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the festival experience. Pair the right assortment of snacks and drinks from your favourite Italian delicatessen in London with a few classic films from the archive, and you can host your own mini Venice Film Festival anytime, Diforti-style!

The Food

Putting together a solid assortment of Italian nibbles is key to creating the ultimate film viewing party; we think that a cheese platter, a cured meat platter and a range of antipasti dishes provide the perfect amount of choice.

Our Italian Cheese Selection, Italian Meat Selection and Vegetarian Antipasti Box make cinematic snacking simple by offering an ideal mix of soft and hard cheeses, rich and mild cured meats and briny, delicious antipasti. It’s also a good idea to keep some Italian breadsticks and crackers on hand to add a little textural crunch. Ultimately, you want to stick with foods that are easily eaten with your hands or with toothpicks – things can get messy when you’re trying to dig in to a big bowl of pasta while engrossed in a film!

The Libations

No glamourous film festival is complete without a few boozy beverages. As you’re welcoming guests, setting up the projector or snacking on a bit of pre-show party food, try a strong Italian aperitif like an Americano or a Negroni. For a lighter, fizzier drink, stir together an Aperol Spritz (our Aperol Spritz Kit makes it easy!).

When it comes to the actual viewing, Italian wine is the only way to go. Try a rich, robust red wine like Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva as you watch an intense drama to amp up the sensual experience, and sip a dry white wine such as Bolla Soave Classico to keep things light during comedies.

Overwhelmed by choice? Not to worry – our Italian deli online can do the work for you! Our Perfect Pairings Wine & Cheese Box contains a fine selection of cheeses exquisitely matched with an Italian red wine, so you can focus on the films and flavours .

The Films

Of course, food and drink is essential at any ritzy film festival – but the films are still the star of the show. Load up these masterpieces (with subtitles, if necessary!) and immerse yourself in the artistry, romance and intrigue of Italian cinema:

  • La Vita è Bella – Set in the 1930s, this heartfelt film follows a Jewish man in Italy as he is sent to a concentration camp. Through his optimism, he attempts to help his son survive.
  • L’avventura – A young woman disappears, and her lover and her best friend set out to find her. This movie’s style is widely known to have revolutionised cinematic compositions and influenced a variety of other filmmakers.
  • Divorce Italian Style – A dark comedy, this film tells the story of a married Sicilian baron who must find a way to murder his wife in order to marry his new love. Its satirical approach will leave you laughing out loud – no wonder it’s a classic!

Who needs the red carpet when you’ve got delicious food, great wine and some of the best films of all time in your queue? Soon, the Venice Film Festival will be coming to you for tips on hosting cinematic events!
