The Best Cheese Toasties

It might be a few months until Christmas, but the best day of the year is already here, because Sept 15th  is Cheese on Toast Day.

In honour of such an exciting day, we’re sharing the best cheeses you can find on Diforti and giving you some inspiration to make the ultimate cheese toasties.

First – cheese toasties are an art, and you must ensure you know your cheeses.

Bontazola Piccante Mauri

Mauri Gorgonzola Piccante is richly marbled with blue-green mould throughout, which is achieved by being aged for at least 90 days and then pressed to create a firm pate. The finished result is a delicately crumbly texture.

Aged Pecorino With Truffle

Aged percorino with truffle is made from 100% pasteurised sheep’s milk, to give a soft but firm texture that has been matured for over a year and refined with black truffle cream. The cheese is left to fully absorb the delicate black truffle aroma for five months, during which time it’s rubbed with vinegar and olive oil.

Mascarpone

Mascarpone is entirely a cheese of its own. Its sumptuously thick and soft texture, and light flavour, makes it the perfect accompaniment to sweet and savoury dishes alike such as a delectable tiramisu.

Ricotta

Traditional Italian fresh ricotta is smoot and mildly sweet. Its light and delicate consistency and clean flavours make it a perfect accompaniment to many dishes – and when sweetened it becomes the perfect filling for cannoli.

Burrata

Burrata is made with a mix of cow’s milk mozzarella and cream, and when it’s cut into it reveals a creamy and buttery filling for a deliciously fresh and refreshing taste.

Mozzarella di bufala

Otherwise known as buffalo mozzarella, mozzarella di bufala is  made from the milk of domestic water buffalo. It’s deliciously versatile, with a mild flavour and thick texture.

Like all authentic Italian food, the best Italian cheeses are best bought fresh, but if you’re looking for an Italian delicatessen, London is one of the best places to be outside of Italy. Otherwise – head to a Italian deli online, such as Diforti; there’s really no excuse not to stock up for Cheese Toast Day.

Now: onto the cheese toasties

As you can see from our video, when made in the oven, cheese toasties come out looking and tasting amazing! Alternatively, if they have a piece of bread on top, toasties can be placed in a horizontal toaster.

Mozzarella, pesto and sundried tomato

When it comes to toasties, mozzarella is a great place to start. And its stringy texture when melted will no doubt leave you coming back for more. When it comes to a mozzarella toastie, it’s best to keep thing simple, while adding in some flavour.

You’ll want to have Diforti’s Nut Free Basil Pesto on hand, the perfect accompaniment for a mozzarella toastie, did we mention it’s vegetarian as well?

Take white crusty slices of bread and cover in a generous layer of the pesto. Cover in hand cut slices of mozzarella and add sundried tomatoes on top to taste. Season with pepper, and either heat on a frying pan or in the oven.

Mascarpone, raspberry and Nutella

To take advantage of mascarpone’s sweet side, spread it onto one piece of bread and spread Nutella onto the other. Place the raspberries on top of the Nutella and slightly squish them down. Then simply put the two pieces of bread together and toast for a delicious toastie.
